Job details
Armaments Research Company (ARC) is a technology company dedicated to bringing real-time situational awareness and battlefield logistics capabilities to the warfighter. You will be an integral part of the ARC team managing program execution in support of our innovative and powerful IoT devices to enhance national security.
Our core offering is the ARC AI-Enabled Weapons Sensor (AEWS), which collects and transmits real-time tactical data to the cloud. This information enables battlefield/tactical awareness and aggregated insights into big data sets that do not exist today. ARC technologies were initially developed in partnership with DARPA and the National Science Foundation and leverage internet-of-things (IoT) technology and machine learning to derive actionable insights and transform operational responses. This novel technology will be deployed at scale to enhance safety, decision-making, and sustainment for the warfighter at the tactical edge.
What You'll DoWe are seeking a highly skilled Cloud Architect to provide technical leadership (not people management) across our cloud infrastructure initiatives. This individual will define, design, and optimize our AWS-based cloud environments—balancing performance, security, scalability, and cost efficiency. The Cloud Architect will collaborate closely with DevOps/DevSecOps, back-end software, and data engineering teams to ensure our systems are secure, scalable, observable, and aligned with business and mission requirements.
Role Responsibilities - How You Will Make an ImpactArchitecture Design & Documentation
- Design and document cloud architectures supporting scalability, reliability, and compliance for commercial and GovCloud environments.
- Evaluate, propose, and implement improvements to existing infrastructure and deployment pipelines.
- Design for both horizontal and vertical scaling based on performance and cost constraints.
Cost Optimization & Analysis
- Model and present cost trade-offs for architectural options.
- Continuously optimize compute, storage, and network resources to control costs without sacrificing performance or resilience.
Cloud Operations & Administration
- Administer and optimize AWS environments, including Identity Center (SSO), IAM roles/policies, and VPC networking.
- Implement secure deployment models (blue-green, canary, roll-forward/rollback) to maximize uptime and reliability.
- Own uptime and availability metrics, ensuring SLAs are met or exceeded.
Observability & Monitoring
- Architect and deploy comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting across all cloud components (EKS, RDS, S3, CloudFront, etc.).
- Integrate observability tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Opensearch) for actionable insights and incident response.
Collaboration & Technical Leadership
- Partner with software and data engineers to design efficient architectures and CI/CD pipelines.
- Provide mentorship and architectural guidance to DevOps/DevSecOps engineers, emphasizing automation and security best practices.
- Serve as the primary technical authority for cloud architecture reviews, compliance assessments, and performance optimization efforts.
- 7+ years of experience in cloud architecture or DevSecOps, including 3+ years designing and operating AWS environments at scale.
- Strong expertise with AWS core services (EC2, EKS, ECS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront, CloudFormation/Terraform, IAM, Identity Center).
- Proven experience with GovCloud and commercial AWS deployments.
- Deep understanding of infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and automation tools (Terraform, AWS CDK, Ansible, etc.).
- Strong familiarity with Kubernetes/EKS, containerization, and CI/CD workflows.
- Hands-on experience implementing monitoring, logging, and observability solutions (CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Opensearch).
- Solid understanding of security best practices, compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, NIST 800-53), and identity management.
- Demonstrated ability to design for fault tolerance, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills; ability to present technical decisions to both engineers and executives.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (or equivalent experience).
- Experience with Azure or GCP environments.
- Experience with multi-tenant, multi-cloud, hybrid, or edge architectures.
- Knowledge of cost governance tools (AWS Cost Explorer, CloudHealth, etc.).
- Background in mission-critical or regulated environments (DoD, IC, or similar).
