The Junior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining data solutions for the Detroit Lions. This role focuses on translating business requirements into technical solutions across data infrastructure, ingestion, transformation, and governance. The ideal candidate is a problem solver with strong attention to detail, capable of working in a fast-paced environment and contributing to various data engineering projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Junior Data Engineer position will be responsible for supporting various data engineering tasks and projects under the guidance of senior team members. Daily responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in building and maintaining the company’s cloud data infrastructure
- Support the development and implementation of ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) pipelines, troubleshooting and resolving issues as they arise
- Develop data models alongside business subject matter experts to enable teams to make informed decisions
- Collaborate with Advanced Analytics team to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions
- Develop and maintain data governance processes to ensure security, stewardship, lineage, and metadata management standards are met
- Assist in monitoring data management operations, including resolving database issues, performance tuning, and storage management
- Help identify, obtain, and integrate disparate data sources for business needs
- Collaborate with IT and other system administrators to assist in the implementation and integration of vendor software solutions
- Collaborate with Football Analytics team to build scalable cloud applications
- Ensure compliance with organizational Privacy and Security Policies in all data operations
- Contribute to the documentation of requirements, design, code, test plans, and other relevant materials to ensure clear communication and adherence to project guidelines
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participate in meetings to discuss data needs and technical solutions with stakeholders.
- Provide technical support for data-related issues and troubleshooting.
- Assist in developing internal best practices, standards, and guidelines for data engineering processes.
- Help new team members or internal users onboard to data systems and tools.
- Stay current with emerging data engineering technologies and trends, recommending new approaches.
- Support the creation of internal tools to improve data accessibility and business intelligence.
- Contribute to ad-hoc projects or tasks as needed across the department.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in technical discipline [computer science, statistics, etc.)
- l+ years of experience with data engineering, ETL processes and database architecture
- Experience with implementing and maintaining cloud infrastructure [AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Experience with Snowflake or similar data warehouse tool
- Experience with dbt or similar data transformation tool
- Advanced Python knowledge and proficiency
- Advanced SQL knowledge and proficiency
- Experience with Docker and containerized application development
- Experience designing logical, conceptual, and physical data models following a framework [e.g. Kimball, Data Vault, etc)
- Experience in data orchestration [e.g. Airflow, Dagster, Step Functions)
- Experience using APis, web services, and automating tasks
- Knowledge of BI, analytics, AI, and machine learning
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills [written and verbal)
