About this role:

We are seeking a Staff Robotics Software Engineer to design and implement software that drives advanced automation systems at Atomic Machines. The ideal candidate has strong computer science fundamentals, expertise in Python and C++, and hands-on experience developing software that interfaces tightly with hardware. This role emphasizes manufacturing automation and system integration — building the control frameworks, diagnostic tools, and software that connect actuators, sensors, and embedded systems into reliable, production-grade platforms. As Atomic Machines scales its manufacturing technology, this role offers the opportunity to develop foundational automation software that enables precision, reliability, and throughput at industrial scale. This role is physically based Monday–Friday in our Santa Clara or Emeryville office.

What you’ll do:
  • Join the Robotics and Controls team within Platform Engineering and work closely with electro-mechanical teams to bring up and integrate new manufacturing processes
  • Develop software for automation sequencing, motion coordination, and hardware interfacing across sensors, actuators, and embedded controllers.
  • Build integration frameworks that connect mechatronic subsystems into cohesive, production-ready manufacturing platforms.
  • Create calibration, diagnostic, and bring-up tools to accelerate deployment of new hardware and simplify troubleshooting for engineers and technicians.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to translate production requirements into robust automation capabilities.
  • Contribute to simulation and digital twin environments to validate software-hardware integration and accelerate deployment cycles.
  • Support development of the Matter Compiler’s mechatronic subsystems, ensuring reliability and repeatability in manufacturing operations.
  • Establish best practices in software development for automation: modularity, testability, and maintainability.
What you’ll need:
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience developing software for mechatronic, automation, or industrial systems.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in Python and C++, bonus points for experience in real-time environments.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing automation concepts, including hardware integration, sequencing, and system-level coordination.
  • Familiarity with sensors (encoders, cameras, force/torque, thermal, etc.) and actuators used in automated systems.
  • Experience building diagnostic, calibration, or test frameworks for complex electromechanical systems.
  • Track record of deploying reliable, production-grade software in manufacturing or automation environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and ability to work independently on complex technical challenges.

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
