What We Do

We build Calm’s product, guide Calm’s analysis, secure Calm’s data, and operate the platforms that underpin it all. We’re product-minded, team-oriented, and grounded in the mission of meeting everyone where they’re at on their mental health journey. We work in fast-moving, small pods and as an Android Engineer you will be expected to gather technical requirements, design and publish technical specs of innovative systems, as well as own building and releasing them into production.

 

We are hiring remote workers for this role in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Minneapolis or NYC areas. At this time, only candidates in these locations will be considered. 

 

What You’ll Do

As an Android Engineer on one of Calm’s product teams, you will build the features that enable Calm to make millions of people happier and healthier. You will work closely with our cross-functional team to ensure our technology is addressing real world problems while being reliable and performant. Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and maintain Android mobile applications
  • Ensure the performance, reliability, and functionality of the applications on a range of devices and operating systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues in the applications
  • Help define the future of the Android app at Calm
  • Be extremely impactful as a member of a small team
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, define project scope, and develop technical specifications
  • Write high-quality, well-documented, and easily maintainable code that adheres to industry standard best-practices
  • Ensure high test coverage for all code, including unit and integration tests
  • Implement Android features with instrumentation and monitoring to detect system errors and performance issues
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest Android technologies and trends

 

Who You Are

  • Experience with the following languages/technologies/frameworks:
    • Kotlin and Java
    • Android Studio
    • Android SDK
    • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and JSON
    • Firebase
  • Proven experience working effectively in a fast-paced, agile environment as part of a collaborative team
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to learn new technologies and tackle challenging problems
  • Experience providing accurate high-level estimates based on complexity and consistently delivering on time and with quality
  • Consistently deliver on commitments through disciplined estimates and task breakdowns
  • Proficiency in writing unit and integration tests in a CI/CD environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure

 

Nice to Haves

  • Previous experience launching and managing apps on Google Play Console

Minimum Requirements

  • This role typically requires 5+ years of related experience
  • 3 years of Android experience with Kotlin language 
  • Past experience building android apps in highly controlled industries, i.e., healthcare

 

The base salary ranges below represent the low and high end of Calm’s salary range for this position in various geographic locations. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, experience and other qualifications. 

In the United States, Calm has four geographic pay zones. For this position, the base pay ranges for candidates in each zone are: 

Zone A: $159,300-$223,000

Zone B: $143,370-$200,700

Zone C: $135,405-$189,550

Zone D: $127,440-$178,400

This role is also eligible for equity + comprehensive benefits + 401k + flexible time off.
